An Interview With An Expert

April 22, 2024

Lianna's Reflection

We decided to interview Ms. Prudham, a guidance counselor at our school, as she is an expert at helping people plan their futures. We asked her several questions, including why she decided to go into guidance, who she recommends that we interview, what resources she would like to see on our website, and asking her for suggestions on how to make our website better. I believe our interview was successful, as she provided thorough feedback and answers. This information will help us make our passion project even better.

Ms. Prudham provided us with lots of helpful information throughout our interview, including who she suggests we interview for our website. Finding people in various post-secondary pathways has been one of the most difficult challenges Ellie and I have faced in our passion project so far. Ms. Prudham was able to give us the names and contact information of some people she believed would be ideal for our project. This was very helpful since we will be able to interview a diverse range of people.

When we asked Ms. Prudham what we could add to our website to improve it, she showed us different resources we could use. These resources range from where to find scholarships to different statistics about post-secondary education. Ellie and I plan to use these resources to enhance our website and to help us better understand what people want to know about post-secondary education. She also showed us the myblueprint surveys and said that it would be interesting if we would be able to add something similar to our website, as she believes that it is a very useful tool.

Ellie's Reflection

The expert we decided to interview was Ms. Prudham as she is one of the guidance counselors at Bluevale. Every day she has meetings with students who are looking for help with their courses, or who are trying to decide where to go after graduation, making her the person we instantly thought of to interview. I would say that our interview was very successful as we were able to take away a lot of valuable information from the questions that we asked and use it to make our blog even better! A few of the questions we asked her were: why she went into guidance, how we could make our website better, and if she had any suggestions for who we should interview next.

Ms. Prudham responded to our first question, "Why did you go into guidance?" with quite a few reasons. Some of the main reasons were that she had always gravitated towards working with children and that she loved how there were more leadership chances and knowledge of the entire school rather than just one class, as she would have if she were a teacher. The primary reason, however, was that she enjoyed assisting children and hoped to have an impact on the students at Bluevale.

When we asked Ms. Prudham how we could improve our website she gave us many helpful sources from which we could pull information from, including an apprenticeship and trades presentation, a report about going into the labor market, a slideshow all about education in Ontario, as well as many others. Lianna and I plan on using these sources to add some statistics and other information to our website to better help students decide what they want to do after high school.

The most helpful information from our interview was Ms. Prudham’s ideas on who we should interview next. She was able to provide us with some names of people going into various post-secondary pathways and how to contact them. The biggest challenge Lianna and I have experienced so far with our blog is finding people we can interview because their school email gets cleared after they graduate from high school. This leaves us unsure how to get in contact with them. So far we have only been able to ask people who we know more closely, so asking Ms. Prudham for suggestions of people she was still in contact with was extremely helpful and provided us with a more diverse group of people to interview.
